The World Premiere production of Metro Street with book, music and lyrics by Matthew Robinson was produced by
Arts Asia Pacific, Power Arts and the
State Theatre Company of South Australia and premiered at the Dunstan Playhouse, Adelaide on April 7, 2009.
The production went on to receive high critical and audience praise and on the strength of the premiere season was invited as the feature opening production of the Daegu International Musical Festival in Daegu, Korea.
The World Premiere production in Adelaide was nominated for a number of prestigious Helpmann Awards (Australia’s equivalent to Broadway’s Tony Awards) alongside musical heavyweights, Wicked, Chicago, Guys and Dolls, My Fair Lady and Spamalot. Nominations for Metro Street included Best New Australian Work, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Best Choreography of a Musical, Best Musical Direction.
On June 15, 2009, Metro Street Opened the Third Annual Daegu Musical Festival again to overwhelmingly positive audience and critical acclaim. The short season was hugely successful and the production received nominations for Best Musical, Best Actor in a Musical (Matthew Robinson), Best Supporting Actress in a Musical (Nancye Hayes) and won for Best Leading Actress in a Musical (Debra Byrne).
Arts Asia Pacific and Power Arts are now in the process of structuring an Australian National tour in 2011 and are also taking expressions of interest for international productions.
